I’m giving this mount for the ND Miata 5 stars. I’ve purchased $100’s worth of phone mounts and the Course Motorsports works the best for me.
Adhesive mounts (Carmount) - These need to be adhered to the dash with a very sticky adhesive which unless you find a hard plastic area – you risk damaging the surface of the dash if you ever need to remove it. Space is at a premium on the ND’s dash. Looks unsightly and takes a lot of the ND’s dash space.
Vent mounts – The ND Miata has one vent in the center of the dash where a vent mount works. Problem is that is a lot of weight hanging off a small piece of plastic which you risk damaging, and you lose access to that vent. Looks unsightly.
Windshield mount – The windshield on an ND Miata is tiny. A phone hanging off the windshield would take up a ¼ of your view!
RSpeed mount – This is a solid contender and works well. My issue with it is it sticks out like a sore thumb on the dash. It uses a single hook behind the dash to hold on. I’m afraid that the mount would eventually dent the area behind it or mar it up.
Course Motorsports – This is my favorite. It uses a combination of an adhesive pad behind the dash and the dash itself to hold the mount in place. It looks great and matches the round air vents on the car (mag safe version). Can hardly tell it's there. Perfect spot to mount a phone and doesn’t interfere with the infotainment screen. Yes, there is some bounce of the phone going over rough roads, but it’s not any worse than other mounts. One way to reduce the amount of bounce would be to place a piece of stiff foam in the circled area in the photo below. I see no possible damage occurring due to the way it mounts.
Nicely made and has great quality but on a stiffly suspended car, my heavy Fold 5 phone tends to bounce around a lot going over bumps. I'm surprised the phone or mount with its tiny one piece of adhesive has held on.
A simple fix would be to include another piece of adhesive to bind it to the dash in a second spot.
For the cost of this mount, it is lacking quite a bit. Phones of weight will have this falling and can already tell the adhesive has failed. Even after using the alcohol pad and adhesion promotor.
When it was secured it bounces a good bit which could explain why the double sided tape already failed.
I also would have like other options for mounting. Specifically the notice that the 25mm ball was an option along with know the package ball is 17mm.
I use a QuadLock Mag Charger for my phone. I'll likely be replacing this mount in the future. Would not recommend.
